5 Lessons I Learned Through DIY Home Renovation

December 9, 2023  |  7 min read

Ally Veldhuisen

A year ago, my husband and I decided to move to Washington, back to my hometown. For a few reasons out of our control, we agreed to buy our home sight unseen last December and anxiously awaited the time we would be able to move in.

Fast-forward to July of 2023—we were finally able to walk through the house for the first time.

We were so excited for that first look. We expected some work would need to be done, and maybe some clean-up, but we were ready to whip through it and move in, lickety-split.

Boy were we surprised when we found that the floors of our house were covered with bird seed, the furnace was not in working order, the water heater had malfunctioned, and many of the pipes had burst—their leaks jerry-rigged with plastic juice containers and clamps.

It was quite a first impression!

We panicked for about five minutes and then started envisioning what the house could be with a little tender loving care. The slow work began that night, and still continues, as we coat our walls with paint, re-install trim, and continue to care for the home we’ve been pouring into for the past 5 months.

Along the way we have been reminded that renovating a home is a labor of love, a testament to dedication, and a canvas for creativity. The process is a slow dance with time, patience, and resilience.

As the dust settles and the paint dries, what remains is not just a revamped space, but a tangible expression of hard work, determination, and the sweet taste of accomplishment.

Here are some renovation reflections we’ve had along the way… mixed in with pictures of course, because that’s what you’re really here for. 😉

1. Challenges are inevitable.

DIY home renovation is not for the faint of heart. It demands a willingness to get your hands dirty, a thirst for knowledge, and a tenacity to push through challenges. From the initial brainstorming phase to the final coat of paint, every step is a lesson, an opportunity to grow both in skill and character.

The challenge lies not only in mastering the technical aspects of construction but also in navigating the emotional rollercoaster that comes with transforming a house into a home.

2. Lean into the learning curve.

One of the most rewarding aspects of DIY home renovation is the continuous learning curve (at least that’s how I’m choosing to see it). Suddenly, you find yourself Googling the difference between semi-gloss and satin finishes, or watching countless YouTube tutorials on “how to ______________” (insert current project here).

The process transforms you into a jack-of-all-trades, as you become proficient in plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and more. Each new skill acquired is a badge of honor, a testament to your ability to learn and adapt.

3. Collaboration fosters community.

While the endeavor might begin as a solo project, the power of collaboration often emerges as a key theme. Friends and family members become invaluable allies, lending not only their hands but also their expertise.

From the friend who is a whiz with a circular saw to the family member who knows the intricacies of interior design, each contribution weaves a tapestry of shared experiences. The renovation becomes a collective effort, a communal celebration of craftsmanship that we get to remember as we live within its walls.

4. There is joy in the details.

As the project inches towards completion, the joy lies in the details. The carefully chosen color palette, the custom-built shelves, the vintage fixtures that tell a story—each detail reflects not only your personal taste but also the soul you’ve poured into the project.

The once-drab walls now resonate with memories of late-night paint sessions and the laughter of loved ones gathered to lend a hand. The reward is not just a visually appealing space, but a sanctuary filled with personal touches that make it uniquely yours.

5. Accomplishment is satisfying.

Finally, as you stand amidst the transformed space, the sweet taste of accomplishment washes over you. The blood, sweat, and tears are now woven into the very fabric of your home. The creaky floors and imperfect seams tell a tale of resilience and determination. The journey, with all its ups and downs, becomes a constant reminder that hard work, when coupled with passion, can turn dreams into reality.

DIY home renovation is not just about fixing walls and installing fixtures; it’s about crafting dreams into tangible spaces.

It’s a journey that can challenge your limits, foster continuous learning, celebrate collaboration, revel in the details, and ultimately reward you with the sweet taste of accomplishment. In the end, you’re reviving more than just a structure—you are reviving your dedication, creativity, and character.
