Play Art with Kim
When people bring up doing some type of creative venture like an art class, etc., do you say something like, “I haven’t got a creative bone in my body!”?
If that’s you, I’ve said similar things for most of life, and I am writing this to show you how wrong you are (gently, and with kindness of course).
If you know you are creative but feel guilty spending time in your creative ‘flow’ without a direct purpose, I feel you. I am also writing this for you, to help you reset your thinking about spending time in your creative passion.
I thought we’d start right in with His words:
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:1-2 (NKJ)
God stood in front of a blank canvas. It wasn’t even primed with nice white gesso! It was devoid of any light, formless and empty. He hovered there for some time, and then he got to work. In seven days, he created this beautiful earth and all of it’s inhabitants.
Look out your window, what do you see? If you’re in the city, maybe look UP to the sky or somewhere you can see the natural world. Out of my window I see trees, mountains, and the sea.
This morning I’m looking at the sunrise and the sky has these gorgeous pinks streaking through the blue. It is truly extraordinary! Each morning I look out and the view is unique and different than the last day. God continues to wow me with his creativity!
Now find a mirror and look at yourself! You were made in HIS image, my friend. I am thrilled to be the one to tell you that you were created with inherent creativity! The bible tells me so.
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him: male and female He created them.”
Genesis 1:26-27 (NKJV)
Mic drop here… ‘nuff said. I really don’t think I have to spend any more time explaining that each of us were made with creativity as a birthright, do you?
If you are still struggling to believe this, just read this verse over a few times and let it sink in.
One last thing on this topic; a ‘pro tip’ if you will…
Think of all the birds on this earth. Each species is vastly different, but how beautiful are they all? God created them all. He created each one with it’s own unique flair. I mean, the colors on some of these beauties are out of this world! Check out our two sweeties:
Not into birds? How about flowers? Same idea.
God is SUPER DUPER creative and He created YOU in his image. It says so in the Bible, so there is no refuting it.
Now that we are all in agreement that creativity is a birthright, let’s work through those guilty feelings when you do something creative ‘just for fun.’
Here’s a little phrase to help us with our self talk:
“Thou shall not feel guilty when tapping into the creativity that is our birthright.”
Write it down! Post it on your coffee pot or your steering wheel, or any place you’ll see it daily.
I used to feel guilty taking time to paint or craft, but at the same time, I LOVED they way I felt whilst I was creating.
It wasn’t until I realized that I was created by a creative God, in His image nonetheless, that I realized I was literally made with this in my body. By expressing my creativity, I am learning about my creator, and thus, about myself.
I now get out my paints almost daily, and enjoy the process of painting as much if not more than the final product.
Have you ever been crafting or painting or knitting or gardening (or doing whatever creative thing you love), and pretty soon you’ve lost track of time and also of all your stress and worry? Sometimes you’ll hear this called “being in the flow state.”
This is directly from your creator. We reflect his creativity in this way.
When I discovered this little nugget of truth, I began to squelch the guilty feelings of taking time to create and recognize the lies I was telling myself about how it isn’t productive or it’s a waste of time, etc.
Do you think God thought to himself, “Gah! I shouldn’t have spent so much time on those birds/flowers/etc. What a waste of my time!”
No, He didn’t! What did he say you ask? At the end of the sixth day of creating, the Bible says, “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”
Hopefully this helps you debunk the lies that bring about guilt when you spend time in the particular variety of creative gifts that God has bestowed upon you.
Please remember these two things:
So, go forth and dive right into that creativity that is your birthright! It’s in there, even if you don’t think it is.
