The holidays are upon us, which means we’re bombarded from all angles about buying more, wanting more, needing more. Commercials flash the latest gadgets, catalogs overflow with merchandise, and social media screams to keep up with the trends. The consumer market and our culture want us to believe we don’t have enough.

And if the belittling from culture about being behind on the trends wasn’t enough, many of us also feel the financial squeeze the holidays so often bring with them. This time of year can quickly become so incredibly stressful when we forget what the season was about back before all these crazy sales got introduced…Thankfulness.

It often seems lost on us that some of the things we view as simple pleasures are the things we should be most grateful for—a roof over our heads, food on our shelves, breath in our lungs. But beyond those things, we all likely have much to be grateful for if we only took a moment to look.

While the world around us promotes discontentment, we can choose to foster genuine gratitude in our lives.

How I'm trying to remember to be thankful this holiday season:

Gratitude Journal or Jar

Write down a few things you’re grateful for daily. Let gratitude grow by regularly taking notice.

Reflect on the Little Things

Don’t just think big. Appreciate a warm shower, a good cup of coffee, and laughter with a friend. It all adds up.

Use Gratitude as a Reset Button

When you find yourself frustrated or upset, shift gears by naming five things you’re thankful for.

Share your Gratitude

Send a quick text, write a note, or tell someone directly why you appreciate them.

Don't Compare

Be thankful for your blessings rather than jealous of what other people have.

Early in this holiday season, I felt a deep desire in my heart for something deeper, something that would fill my heart more than the things that were bombarding me on social media or TV.

After searching and praying for answers, I realized it was a calling God was placing on my heart to refocus myself and my family, by extension, on true thankfulness this holiday season.

As with everything in life, this process of refocusing is a work in progress, but in a world constantly screaming for more, I’m learning to quiet that noise and listen to my heart. Seeing my life through a lens of gratitude has had a profound impact already. I’m excited to look back after the holidays are over and see how this change of lens has impacted us even further.
