Every Season. Every Space. All for Him.

The Bible has drawn my attention to sheep, sparking a curiosity that’s blossoming into a genuine respect for this often-underappreciated farm animal. This sentiment stands in stark contrast to the world’s negative portrayal of sheep.Â
We hear the familiar phrases ‘black sheep,’ suggesting a disgraceful outcast; ‘like sheep,’ implying a fundamental lack of individuality; and ‘sheeple,’ denoting a dangerous tendency to blindly follow others.Â
But for women of faith, we have a powerful opportunity to reclaim the depiction of sheep through God’s eyes. Our true identity isn’t defined by worldly perceptions, but by God’s loving designation: we are His sheep.
In my personal bible study, I’ve been mesmerized by how frequently God uses the imagery of sheep to illustrate our divine connection with Him. Two verses in particular I’ve reflected and meditated on offer an impactful perspective on our relationship with God:
“Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” Psalm 100:3Â
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:14-15
These scriptures, along with many others, establish Jesus Christ as our Good Shepherd, whose flock includes every woman who places her faith and trust in His loving care. Our walk with Him is one of divine guidance, nurtured by a Shepherd who knows us intimately, not a demand for blind obedience.
By cultivating a steadfast, grounded, and deeply rooted reliance on the Good Shepherd, we can gain spiritual discernment, acting as a safeguard against “bad shepherds”—false teachings and the relentless pressures of the world. We also have assurance that God attends to our deepest needs and desires that align with His perfect will. This understanding has not only brought comfort but has also ignited a creative spark within me.
The seed for The Empowered Ewe was planted by the powerful biblical idea of humanity as God’s flock. This image held a surprising depth, suggesting themes of care, guidance, and belonging. I envisioned a digital space where these themes could be unpacked and related to the everyday experiences of women.
Discovering that “ewe”—the female of the sheep—rhymes with “you” felt like a perfect way to directly address women. And so, The Empowered Ewe began its journey, with the aim of offering enriching content and building a community inspired by the gentle strength of sheep.
My newfound appreciation for sheep unexpectedly influenced a trip I planned for my best friend’s birthday earlier this Spring to the iconic New York City. As the designated planner of birthday festivities, I turned to Google for help and stumbled upon a 15-acre green space within Central Park called Sheep Meadow. It felt like a divine nudge we simply had to add to our itinerary.
Standing in that serene field, where grazing sheep once diligently kept the grass manicured, I was deeply struck by their inherent worth. It served as a tangible reminder of God’s tender and unwavering love and care for each one of His sheep, including you and me.
As we embrace our identity as His sheep, we discover not weakness but profound strength in belonging to the Good Shepherd who knows us by name. May this biblical imagery remind us daily that we are fully known, deeply loved, and intentionally guided by a God whose care for us is as vast as the meadows He provides.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:1-4
Lord,
thank You for being our Good Shepherd who provides real guidance in our everyday decisions. Help us hear Your voice clearly when we feel lost or uncertain, and give us the courage to follow where You lead. As members of Your flock, remind us that we can find genuine peace and security in Your loving care.
Amen.
